Return of the Overlord
by Count Stex on Mar.22, 2009, under Uncategorized
No I’m not about to release some inside info about the forthcoming sequel, but it is a return of sorts. you see shortly after Overlord came out I played in on the PC. I was a member of Metaboli Games at the time, an interesting service, however not compatible with XFire, and as someone who likes to show off what they play that was a killer for me. I did rather enjoy the game, but on PC the control system just didn’t quite work for me and I felt it had been dumbed down for consoles. However a couple of years later and I own on of these ‘dumb’ consoles so I figured I should give it another go
The same fun factor is there, the lovable imps with their wonderful gremlinesk phrases are still a key factor, and on the analogue sticks of an XBOX 360 contoller the control system is evidently pretty spot on. I still lament that I have to play this on a console to get the correct gaming experience, however I could always have just gotten a 360 style controller for the PC and have overcome the cumbersome mapping to a mouse for the ‘shove imps’ moves.
At this point I’ve yet to pass where I had gotten up to on the PC version, but reliving the early gameplay still has enough charm to keep me going. PenguinGirl has also been playing it quite a lot and it’s been interesting to she the subtle differences in how we play the game. She tends to favour the ‘push’ method of control for her minions, whilst I go for the ‘launch’ and she’d far more likely to wade into the battle herself. Could be the female lack of trust in the male sounding minions to do the job right
The game is certainly getting some hours at present, so I should be able to report back at some point in the next couple of weeks and how things progress once I’m into new content, unless something new and shiney comes along to distract me entirely.
A Kingdom for Keflings : First Reactions
by Count Stex on Feb.22, 2009, under Uncategorized
Linda decided to try out A Kingdom for Keflings tonight, after seeing one of our friends was playing it. After a brief 15 minutes or so of trial play she decided it was worth the low cost and made the purchase. Seems to be in the same vein as the old classic Settlers, however to get around the problem of having no mouse control here they’ve taken the route of having you appear in the game as a helpful giant. And it does seem this sollution works rather well, and has the added bonus of being able to use your own avatar character rather than the built in couple. Not clear at this point how much legs the game will have, but it appears to be a fairly solid first play through.
